Measure Twice, Cut Once: Reality Capture in Geospatial Surveying

Severn Partnership's tech-driven expansion is turning heads (and data points) across the industry.

In this week’s story, we cover how Severn has grown using the newest innovations, namely reality capture.

Here’s a sneak peek:

  • Early Adoption: When others were still using tape measures, Severn was rocking Leica Pegasus and mapping the future. We call that being ahead of the curve (and the straight line).
  • Partnership Power: Their collaboration with Leica Geosystems is so strong, we’re starting to wonder if they should swipe right on each other.
  • Agility: With 3D laser scanning and mobile mapping, they’ve got more moves than a GPS recalculating your route.

But it’s not all business—they’ve also got a serious knack for safety and efficiency. They’re the type who’d measure twice and still save time on the job. Who knew surveying could be so cutting-edge?

If you’re ready to learn from the pros, check out the full story and see how Severn Partnership is setting the standard (and trust us, their standards are pretty precise).

WHAT'S UP

  • Twinnovation Boom: The 3DEXPERIENCE platform from Dassault Systemes is accelerating the construction industry’s transformation. Integrated virtual twins enable innovators to imagine alternatives to fossil energies such as nuclear, hydrogen or biofuels as well as to accelerate the construction industry’s transformation to scalable, sustainable approaches.
  • AI Alliance: Industrial copilots are poised to revolutionize the way companies design, plan, develop, engineer, and work by combining the strengths of humans and AI to meet challenges across the industrial value chain.

WHAT'S NEXT

  • Recent reports from social media platforms like Reddit and X shared images and minor details of an upcoming Quest 3s MR headset. According to leakers online, Meta will debut what appears to be a new MR headset based on the leaked images.
  • Pico recently teased a new headset on its official social media channels, proving the Chinese firm is still a competitive horse in the XR device marketplace. Discovered by Android Headlines, the upcoming headset is the Pico 4S a mixed-reality device seen via a series of promotional images. It appears lightweight in frame and similar to a Vision Pro in style with outward-facing cameras, supporting the passthrough MR features.
  • Mobideo has launched its digital twin solution powered by R2S software. The digital twin introduces a virtual site model developed in collaboration with James Fisher Asset Information Services (AIS).
  • Sara Johnston, the COO of Motive.io, recently spoke on the growth of VR training and the value of middleware/XMS layers and chimed in on GenAI, AR Smart Glasses, VR Training, and Scaling Workplace XR.

WHAT'S THE DEAL

  • ArborXR announced it has secured $12 million in funding, a Series A that will be used to develop and to boost its management platform for AR and VR devices To date, ArborXR has raised over $25 million.

  • Buildots, an AI-based construction software company, announced a $15 million investment led by Intel Capital with participation from OG Tech Partners and previous investors.
  • The U.S. Department of Energy published a “road map” to implement the Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence for Science, Security, and Technology, or FASST, initiative, which aims to develop the United States’ AI capabilities for scientific discovery, energy research and national security.

Geospatial Glory at Paris Summer Olympics 2024

The 2024 Olympic Games, held this year in Paris, France, recently concluded. Both the Opening and Closing ceremonies created plenty of justified buzz, but of course it was the athletic achievement on display that defined the two-week event. Watching from home in the United States, one of the most pleasantly surprising aspects of this year’s Olympics was the unexpected amount of crossover between these Games and what we cover at Geo Week News around 3D, geospatial, and AEC technologies.

In terms of the actual competition on the field, it was geospatial technologies that were helping separate the competitors with precise measuring capabilities. This is something we had covered in Geo Week News last week thanks to a guest post from Leica Geosystems, part of Hexagon, and Hans-Martin Zogg. In the guest post, he detailed how precise laser scanning systems like the ones provided by Leica Geosystems are being used for measurements in events like the long jump, shot put, discus throw, and more. As he writes, the total stations are stationed on the sidelines of these events and used to measure and record distances accomplished by the athletes in precise manners to determine the winners.

Along with this use of the technology in the actual competition, those of us at home also had our viewing experiences lifted by the use of some new and exciting 3D visualization technologies. For example, Cesium's technology was used to help NBC Sports, who holds the broadcasting rights for the Games in the United States. NBC had the task of displaying quickly and easily to viewers the scope of how Paris was hosting the games and where different events were held, and they opted to use 3D visualizations to fly through the city and show these event locations. To do so, they paired its 3D models of stadiums and venues with Cesium for Unreal and Google’s Photorealistic 3D Tiles. Learn more -->  (h/t Geo Week News)
